Defining New Media

I would define new media as the change between computer and cultural communication, affecting social, business and creative elements of our society.

“The impact of this new media on society is varied in both positive

and negative outlooks.”

(Nicoleta, 2008)

New media has been integrated into everyones lives and have changed it for the better or worse, I personally believe its been for the better. I use new media to socialise, work and creative express. I fact we all do in some sort of way, I use a camera to capture my creative version of a story, then use editing software to compose it together and social media to share it. New media has been the creation and birth of many things.

In the world of film new forms video capture and display are created through new media innovations such as VR/360 video genre. The idea first developing of immersion through wider field of view was in the nineteenth centre and creation of Panoramic paintings, plus the development in stereoscopic photos in 1838. but the real step towards the VR/360 we know today was in 1961 where the first head mounted display motion track to a circuit camera. Created by two Philco Corporation engineers Comeau and Bryan.

Today Oculus, sony, mirosoft, Lenovo, Dell, Acer and many more companies are creating VR head mounted displays. This form of genre won’t have been create if wasn’t from the innovation in new media technology.

“By chatting with strangers in chat rooms and reading internationals newspapers online, we believe that we are learning about foreign cultures and perspectives directly from the sources.”

(Nicoleta, 2008)

This quote on the impact of new media to our society perfectly examples the positive and the negative about one aspect of new media development to culture. The use of the internet has gain mass people to access information about the world from other people. Understanding skills, experiences and expand their social learning. My positive experience of new media social learning was understand about the experience of people with mental health issues. Working an internship on crowdfunding campaign called “the power of one coin”, my duties were to contact bloggers posting experiences about their mental health, I learnt the great hardship people go through and positive effects it had on them to post and communicated with others.

However the internet has many unreliable sources and misinform user about facts, cultures, behaviour, which effects the future of the people who view it. This offer why academics say don’t use Wikipedia a source of information this because the website can be edited by anyone, their go possible editing wrong information on to the website.

Today the youth generation are influsned the most as shown by the recent surveys revealing kids most desired jobs in the future is vlogger, youtuber or online video posting. It has also be popular the identifying use of fake news.

The effects on our culture and society are the same effects they impacted of people years before however the media has only remediated. The fake news have been an issue in the past as journalist can be bought off or simply report the wrong information back to their newspaper company, the only thing that has changed is that newspaper has been remediated into online new websites and social media platforms which brings greater news spreadability, interaction and hypermediacy, combining video, links and other media channels to one platform to communicate the story better to viewers.

This use of hypermedicy to tell a story through multiple media channels can be linked to other forms of new media such as film and TV use of trans media. Transmedia is using other forms of media to tell a story in a film or tv franchise. A great example of this is Dr John H Watson blog for the BBC TV programme of Sherlock.

“The BBC’s Sherlock television series, for instance is augmented by various websites seemingly ‘written’ by the fictional character Dr Watson, the latter’s blog being referenced within the television series, consistent with the programmes frequent deployment of digital technologies within its diegesis”

(Harvey, 2015)

The blog is deepens the narrative story of Dr Waston’s experience and character in the programme, audiences will gain other information about the adventure they go on and feel more connected the character.

Another example of trans media is the clover field franchise, the cloverfield franchise has three released films but all having different story lines, characters and settings, the only common element is the name clover field and the clover field monster. The films focus on characters that find them selves in dramatic simulation roughly relating to an attack from an unknown being or source. The stories are covered in mystery as no clean information tells the view about the reasoning behind these situations, however information can be found through the franchises trans media. The clover field story has a series of fake websites that leave clues about the clover field story, fan have to figure out and links clues together to collect information about clover field monster. This trans media deepens the films with subtext for certain views and creates stronger bonds between story and audience.
